Crash Kills

By MIKE GLENN Copyright 2009 Houston Chronicle

A young woman was killed this morning and two men were taken to a hospital after a minivan ran a red light and collided with a car on Houston’s south side, police said.

The accident occurred about 7 a.m. at Mykawa and Airport Boulevard.

The woman, who police said appeared to be in her late teens or early 20s, was a front-seat passenger in the minivan when it ran a red light while westbound on Airport, officers said.

The minivan collided with a car that was southbound on Mykawa. The force of the impact knocked both vehicles onto their sides and ejected the woman, as well as the man who was driving the minivan, police said.

Neither occupant of the minivan was wearing a seat belt, police said.

The man who was driving the car crawled out and was taken to Ben Taub General Hospital, as was the driver of the minivan, officers said. Their conditions were not available.

A major traffic jam developed after the crash, with vehicles on Airport being diverted onto side streets and traffic on Mykawa being funneled into one lane as police investigated and the wreckage was cleared.
