BAUSCH & LOMB RENU WITH MOISTURELOC ®
AND FUNGAL KERATITIS
ReNu with MoistureLoc Linked to Fungal Infections
ReNu with MoistureLoc is a soft contact lens solution which was introduced by Bausch & Lomb in late 2004. This product was developed as a solution for contacts lens wearers to use in conjunction with the cleaning of daily wear contact lens. On May 15, 2006, Bausch & Lomb recalled ReNu with MoistureLoc because of reported instances of fungal keratitis infections associated with the use of the product.
Fungal Keratitis
Fungal keratitis is a serious eye infection that can involve the whole depth of the cornea and can be very difficult to treat. It can be treated through prolonged drug therapy with anti-fungals. If drugs do not work and eye infection persists, surgery may be necessary to remove fungal ulcers or lesions. Symptoms of fungal keratitis include eye pain, eye discomfort, decrease in vision and light hypersensitivity. This infection can cause complete loss of vision if not treated.
